Vaginal Rejuvenation

Heard the terms ‘Vaginal Rejuvenation’ and ‘Designer Vagina’?

A Vaginal Rejuvenation procedure is a non-reconstructive vaginoplasty that restores the muscle tone and the aesthetics of the vagina. Basically it removes excess tissues and offers an instant tightening to the supportive structures of the vagina. It is a becoming more and more popular, and seems particularly so for woman following childbirth when their vagina has stretched and muscles become weak.

Our bodies change after childbirth and as we age, however this natural ageing of our bodies does not have to be corrected by expensive surgery. With regular Kegel exercises a woman can achieve much better results naturally and make her body stronger too. Also if muscles have become weak, the procedure of excess skin and flesh being cut away still won’t strengthen the muscles which is the real, underlining problem. If we start to feel a weakness it is our bodies telling us that we need to strengthen and prevent the problems of weakness – likely to lead to leakage and possible prolapse.

Advocates of surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation state that this procedure has profound effects on a woman’s self-image. However the disadvantages seem to be played down. With any surgery there will be nerve damage resulting loss of sensation and genital sensation. Any pelvic surgery will weaken the pelvic floor possibly leading to further weakness problems of prolapse and incontinence. And of course there are surgical complications and possibilities of infection.

What do the experts think?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2007 voiced opposition to what they saw as commercial misrepresentations of labiaplasty, and associated vaginal plastic surgery procedures, as medically “accepted and routine surgical practices”. They doubted the medical safety and the therapeutic efficacy of the techniques and surgical procedures for performing labiaplasty, vaginal rejuvenation, the designer vagina, revirgination, and Gräfenberg Spot amplification, and recommended that women seeking such procedures must be fully informed, with the available surgical-safety statistics of the potential health risks of surgical-wound infection, pudendal nerve damage (resulting in either an insensitive or an over-sensitive vulva), dyspareunia (painful sexual intercourse), tissue adhesions and painful scars.
