Proctosigmoidectomy

What is a Proctosigmoidectomy?

Proctosigmoidectomy is surgery to repair a rectal prolapse, or rectocele. The repair is made through the anus without external incision.

Proctosigmoidectomy is also known as the Altemeier procedure (or Altemeiers) where the prolapse portion of the rectum is removed and the cut ends reattached. The weaker structures supporting the rectum may be stitched back into their normal position.
