Altemeier Procedure

Altemeier Procedure (or Altemeiers) is the name given to a form of surgery to repair a rectal prolapse, or rectocele. The repair is made through the anus without external incision.

What does the Altemeier Procedure involve?

During the Altemeier procedure (also called a proctosigmoidectomy), the prolapsed portion of the rectum is removed and the cut ends reattached. The weakened structures supporting the rectum are then stitched back into their normal position.

Kegel exercise is vital to improve the results of surgery and maintain the repair.

Women with a rectal prolapse are more likely to go onto suffer a bladder prolapse so it is vital to pelvic floor exercise to ensure other pelvic organs do not prolapse.
