Colposcopy is when your GP or Consultant uses a magnifying device to view your cervix and vagina. During this procedure a small sample of tissue can be taken (biopsy) for analysis, this might be taken for the cervix or from just inside your cervix.

Why Have A Colposcopy?

The Colposcopy could be performed as a result of the following:

  • an abnormal 'smear' test
  • to check for genital warts
  • to check cervical/vaginal health


How Is A Colposcopy Performed?

Using a Colposcope a lighted magnifying device - your health professional will be able to look closely at your cervix and the surrounding area. A camera can be attached to the colposcope to take pictures and/or colposcopy film footage.
