A process in which a cystoscope is inserted into the urethra and up into the bladder to examine the inside of the bladder. Diagnostic cystoscopy is usually carried out under local anaesthetic. The urethra is the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body and the cystoscope is passed along it and up into the bladder.

Cystoscopy procedure for the bladder

The cystoscope has lenses enabling the inner surfaces of the urinary tract (urethra) and bladder to be observed. Many cystoscopes have extra tubes to help guide other instruments for surgical procedures designed to treat urinary problems.

There are flexible and rigid cystoscopes.
