Haemorrhoidectomy is the name given to the surgery to remove haemorrhoids (piles); it is usually performed under general anaesthetic or spinal anaesthetic. Haemorrhoids are swollen veins in the rectum or around the anus.

During the procedure incisions are made in the tissue around the haemorrhoid (pile). The swollen vein inside the haemorrhoid (pile) is tied off to prevent bleeding, and the haemorrhoid is then removed.
