Levator Ani Syndrome

What is Levator Ani Syndrome?

Levator Ani Syndrome is also known as proctalgia (pain in the rectum), Proctalgia fugax, Levator Syndrome or 'anal cold'. It is defined as chronic pain in the rectum or sacrococcygeal pain (pain in the tail bone - coccyx and sacrum). It's a cramp-like spasm and the pain and/or aching can last up to 20 minutes.

Health professionals think that it is either related to the internal anal sphincter or that it is neuralgia (intense, intermittent pain) of the pudendal nerve. It is recurrent and there is no known cure.

A number of small medical trials have looked at treatments for levator ani syndrome (chronic proctalgia), sadly with frustrating results for both sufferers and health professionals alike. Some medical professionals advocate relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles using either biofeedback, EMS Electrostimulation machines such as Kegel8 Ultra Pelvic Toner and/or massage of the levator ani.

Suggested Levator Ani Syndrome treatment:

  • Heat treatments - such as warm baths, warm enemas, heating pads.
  • Relaxation exercises - Kegel8 Ultra Pelvic Toner can help with a special programme for Levator Ani Syndrome exercises in the form of muscle relaxation. The relaxation stops the muscles going into spasm which could be the cause of the pain.
  • Antispasmodic medication is sometimes also prescribed
  • Low dose diazepam at bedtime has been suggested as a preventative measure as most episodes occur at night.

How The Kegel8 Ultra Pelvic Toner Can Help Levator Ani Syndrome

Kegel8 can also be used externally to help to relax your pelvic floor muscles - there are programmes for pelvic pain and pelvic relaxation that both use skin electrodes to get directly to the pain and release the tension and spasms associated with this condition.

As always, Kegel8 is here to help you, call our helpline for more information.
