Mucous membrane

What Are Mucous Membranes?

Any of the membranes lining the passages of the body, such as the respiratory and digestive tracts, that open to the outside are known as mucosa or mucous membranes.

Cells within the mucous membranes secrete mucus, which lubricates the membranes protecting against infection.

Examples of mucosa or mucous membrane are the linings of the genital and urinary tracts.
