What is Oestrogen?

(Variant of estrogen) Oestrogen is a female steroid sex hormone; it is secreted primarily by the ovaries and responsible for typical female sexual arousal. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) stimulates the ovaries to produce oestrogens; some oestrogens are also produced in smaller amounts by other tissues such as the liver, adrenal glands, and the breasts. These secondary sources of oestrogens are especially important in postmenopausal women. Fat cells produce oestrogen as well.

Oestrogens, or estrogen, are the primary female sex hormones. Natural oestrogens (estrogens) are steroid hormones, while some synthetic ones are non-steroidal.

Oestrogen levels vary through the menstrual cycle, with levels highest just before ovulation.

Oestrogen HRT Therapy and Urinary Incontinence

Researchers have found* that post menopausal women taking HRT with oestrogen for five years or more were more likely to develop urinary incontinence (UI) than were women who took oestrogen for less than five years or not at all.
