Many sufferers may also experience pelvic pain during lovemaking, when going to the toilet, or if seated for long periods. .

What Causes Pelvic Pain Syndrome?

  • Endometriosis - the lining of the womb grows on the outside of the uterus instead of the inside. This tissue is affected by the monthly changes and any bleeding is then contained within the abdomen because it does not have an outlet. This can cause cysts and painful scarring.
  • Tension within the Pelvic Floor Muscles - the muscles go into spasms and the tension results in pain and discomfort.
  • Chronic PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) -  following a long term infection, sometimes sexually transmitted scarring can cause pain in the pelvic organs.
  • Ovarian remnant after hysterectomy - if all the ovarian tissue is not completely removed a painful cyst can develop.
  • Fibroids - causing heaviness in the pelvic area - these non-cancerous growths cause pain and discomfort.
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome - diarrhoea, constipation and bloating add pressure and pain to a congested pelvic area.
  • IC (interstitial cystitis) or Painful bladder syndrome - unlike bacterial cystitis which is treatable with antibiotics the bladder become chronically inflamed and frequent urination is necessary.
  • Psychological factors - stress, depression, sexual or physical abuse, can all trigger Pelvic Pain Syndrome. Sadly this condition can also be made worse by emotional problems and problems too.
  • Pelvic Congestion Syndrome - varicose veins around the ovaries and pelvic area can become enlarged and painful.
