Trocar-guided transvaginal mesh

What is TVM?

Trans vaginal mesh (TVM) is inserted into the abdomen using a trocar, a medical instrument that introduces ports into the body through which the mesh is inserted. One example of a Trocar guided transvaginal mesh operation is using 'Prolift'.

Recent news featuring Transvaginal mesh has highlighted potential problems with both the material used in the mesh and long term side effects. In November 2010* a study involving 150 patients who underwent Prolift transvaginal mesh procedure was carried out to assess whether this surgery could provoke prolapse of other hither to unprolapsed organs within the pelvic floor.

The study showed that tension-free vaginal mesh treatment of one vaginal compartment seemed to 'provoke the development of vaginal prolapse in initially unaffected vaginal compartments'. This was particularly so after an isolated anterior Prolift procedure. So, the very operation performed to correct a prolapsed organ, then promotes another organ to prolapse? This is horrifying news to any woman who has undergone mesh surgery for prolapse.

What can be done about mesh surgery complications?

It is clear that surgery is not always the answer to a weak pelvic floor, and pelvic organ prolapse. Get good medical advice, find a Womens Physiotherapist and seek out non-surgical alternatives, but always rememebr you have to kegel exercise to strengthen your pelvic floor.

That's why you need Kegel8 - do remember that no drug  or surgery will strengthen the pelvic floor muscles - so after you have undergone any form of pelvic surgery, your need to exercise to maintain any benefits and prevent further pelvic organ prolapse too.

As always, Kegel8 is here to help you, call our helpline for more information.
