Epsom salt is a pure mineral compound which boasts many benefits especially when used for pelvic pain, natural pain relief and as a natural constipation cure. When you soak in an Epsom salt bath or sitz bath the magnesium sulfate is absorbed by the body. [1] Epsom salt is a pure mineral compound which boasts many benefits especially when used for Pelvic pain, natural pain relief, and as a natural cure for constipation.

The formula for all Epsom salt contains the naturally occurring minerals of magnesium and sulfate. The Epsom salt selected by Kegel8 is food grade quality, that means it is suitable for all uses including as a laxative cure and for ingestion. We took the view that if you decide to use the Epsom salt in a Sitz bath and you are either post baby, recovering from surgery or soaking stiches, the last thing you want is a mineral that is not fit for consumption. There are different ways of manufacturing and packaging Epsom salt, and different “grades” of Epsom salt for different applications, such as human use and agricultural applications. Please make sure you choose ‘Food Grade’ Epsom Salt to ensure it is of the highest quality

Interstitial Cystitis (IC) sufferer and blogger The Happy Bladder says ‘This is just one of many natural ways we can nourish and support our bodies in times of flares or just as a way to get further along the healing path. An Epsom salt bath can help to relax muscles, improve circulation, and offer stress relief.’

How to take a Sitz bath or Epsom Salt Bath

Dr R H Waring from the University of Birmingham evaluated bathing in Epsom salts and reported the following, ‘After initial pilot studies, all volunteers took baths (temperatures 50-55°C) and stayed in the bath for 12 minutes. They added varying amounts of magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts) to the bath before entry and ensured that the salts were completely in solution.’ Volunteers were male and female and blood samples were taken before the bath, 2 hours after the first bath and 2 hours after the 7th consecutive bath. Baths were taken daily, at the same time every day, and on consecutive days. Urine samples were also taken under the same conditions. Dr Waring concluded ‘Bathing in Epsom salts is a safe and easy way to increase sulfate and magnesium levels in the body.’

By naturally increasing magnesium sulfate levels in the body you will help to boost the deficiency of magnesium that 80% of us currently suffer. Magnesium, helps relieve pelvic pain, it is more effective than laxatives in treating constipation, which subsequently means less pressure on the pelvic floor. Improved magnesium levels can help give better bladder control because it relaxes the muscle spasms which contribute to the symptoms of urge and overflow incontinence. Magnesium is also credited with easing premenstrual syndrome symptoms.

How to Take Food-Grade Epsom Salt for Constipation

For adults and children 12 years old and older, dissolve 2-4 level teaspoons of Epsom salt in 8 ounces (240 ml) of water and drink immediately. For children 6 to 11 years old, dissolve 1-2 level teaspoons of Epsom salt in 8 ounces (240 ml) of water and drink immediately.

If you don’t like the taste of Epsom salt try adding fresh lemon juice. You can repeat the dose if the first one doesn’t work after 4 hours. Don’t take more than two doses of Epsom salt daily or use it for more than one week without consulting your doctor. It is recommended you contact your doctor if you don’t have a bowel movement after two doses of Epsom salt.

How to Use Food-Grade Epsom Salt in a Bath or Sitz Bath

In a full bath dissolve 2 cups (500ml) of Epsom salt in a bath full of warm water. Soaking in it may help relax your gut and soften your stool as you absorb magnesium through your skin. This may help produce a bowel movement. Soak for at least 12 minutes for maximum absorption.[1]

In a Sitz bath use 1/2 cup (125ml) of Epsom salt, dissolved. Soak for 12 minutes for maximum absorption.[1]

Here’s why Kegel8 recommends you use regular Epsom Salt baths:

Consider Epsom Salt Bath or Sitz Bath for Pelvic Pain & Vulvodynia ✔

  • Bathing in Epsom salts is a safe and easy way to increase sulfate and magnesium levels in the body.[1]
  • A healthy magnesium level is essential in the production of the happy-hormone serotonin. Some hormone production managed by magnesium is responsible for calming the brain and inducing relaxation - insomnia and sleeplessness are both signs of magnesium deficiency.
  • Magnesium is used to promote pain relief and muscle relaxation in surgical patients.[2]
  • Lots of women who suffer vulvodynia lack essential nutrients for the vulvar, vaginal, and pelvic tissues. Vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acid, other antioxidant, B vitamin, and magnesium deficiencies commonly show up.[3]

Consider Epsom Salt Bath or Sitz Bath for Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) ✔

  • Magnesium supplements have been shown by The University of Maryland Medical Center can possibly help to relieve symptoms associated with PMS, particularly: bloating, insomnia, leg swelling, weight gain and breast tenderness.[4]

Consider Epsom Salt Bath or Sitz Bath if you have Urge Incontinence (UI) and Overflow Incontinence ✔

  • Detrusor overactivity causes urge incontinence and overflow incontinence. The detrusor muscle is the muscle in the lining of the bladder and irritation of this causes the symptoms of incontinence. Magnesium decreases an excessive amount of nerve stimulation in the nervous system, so by improving Magnesium levels in the body could help to relax the detrusor smooth muscle.[5]

Consider Epsom Salt Bath or Sitz Bath to treat Constipation and for Pelvic Floor Strengthening ✔

  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Epsom salt for the treatment of constipation. Consuming Epsom salt increases the amount of water in your intestines. This softens your stool and makes it easier to pass. [6] Constipation is detrimental for the pelvic floor muscles due to the repeated straining to pass a motion, and the excessive weight of supporting full bowels.
  • Low Magnesium levels = increased constipation. Researchers in Tokyo found a significant increase when they researched 3,800 women. [7] Getting extra magnesium into the body via a bath or sitz bath should help improve constipation. By relaxing muscles and neutralising stomach acid extra Magnesium helps speed the passage of waste through the intestines.

Consider Epsom Salt Bath or Sitz Bath if your pelvic floor problems make you anxious and cause you stress ✔

  • These data support a relationship between low Magnesium (Mg2+) levels and both anxiety-related behaviour and a modulated stress axis. [8]

Consider Epsom Salt Sitz Bath or bath if you have a Bartholin's Gland Cyst ✔

  • The Bartholin's glands are located symmetrically at the back part of the vaginal opening, at 4 and 8 o’clock. Playing an important role in the female reproductive system these glands are involved in mucus secretion and vaginal lubrication. When the Bartholin's gland duct gets blocked, the glands produce a build-up of mucus. [9] This build-up leads to a Bartholins cyst formation or Bartholin's gland abscess. Bartholin's abscess cultures often show polymicrobial and for this reason it could be treated with Oregano Oil capsules. Large proportions of Bartholin's gland abscess are bacterial culture positive with Escherichia coli being a common pathogen.
  • Sitz baths with Epsom Salts are also recommended for treatment of Bartholin’s gland cysts.

  7. Association between dietary fibre, water and magnesium intake and functional constipation among young Japanese women. Conclusion: Low intakes of water from foods and magnesium are independently associated with an increasing prevalence of functional constipation among a population whose dietary fibre intake is relatively low.
  8. Magnesium deficiency induces anxiety and HPA axis dysregulation: Modulation by therapeutic drug treatment. Conclusion: Taken together, the present findings demonstrate the robustness and validity of the Mg2+ deficiency model as model of enhanced anxiety-related behaviour and further supports emerging evidence in humans that reduced Mg2+ levels are associated with different facets of anxiety behaviour.
  9. The blockage of the glands' ducts often leads to formation of a cyst and consequently an abscess may develop. Although small Bartholins cysts may be asymptomatic and can be left untreated, large cysts and abscess require attention and medical treatment.
