Finding the Right Size
Getting the right fit is everything when it comes to a pessary — and your healthcare professional will guide you through this process with care. It's perfectly normal to trial a few sizes before finding the one that feels right.
A well-fitted pessary should feel completely unnoticeable once in place. You should be able to sit, stand, move around, and go to the toilet comfortably without any awareness of it being there.
Your clinician will check that:
- The pessary sits comfortably without causing any pressure or discomfort
- There is enough space to sweep one finger between the pessary and the vaginal walls
- It stays in position when you sit, stand, or gently bear down
- You can urinate freely and without difficulty
Please note: If you find it difficult to urinate with the pessary in place, let your healthcare professional know straight away. It simply means a slightly smaller size is needed — this is easily resolved.
The Balance Ring Pessary With Support is available in the following outer diameter sizes: 51mm, 70mm, 89mm, 102mm.
Managing Your Pessary at Home
Depending on your circumstances, your healthcare professional may teach you how to manage your pessary yourself at home - including removal, cleaning, and reinsertion. Many women find this gives them a wonderful sense of independence and control over their own care.
That said, most women will continue to have their pessary managed by their healthcare team, and that's completely fine too.
Caring for Your Pessary
Keeping your pessary clean is simple and only takes a few minutes. Here's how:
- Mix a small amount of mild soap with tap water in a container large enough to fully submerge the pessary
- Soak it for at least 5 minutes
- Gently scrub with a soft-bristled brush for at least 15 seconds, keeping the pessary below the waterline as you clean
- Rinse thoroughly under running tap water for at least 30 seconds
- Leave it to air dry completely before reinserting
Give your pessary a quick visual check each time you clean it. If you notice any cracks or breaks in the silicone, it's time to replace it — don't wait until your next scheduled appointment.
